ADVENTURES with FOOD!

Over the past weeks we have been introduced to some delicacies and some traditional Portuguese food.  Some have been better than others....I am sure some are an acquired taste - something you either love or hate.....like 'fry sauce' which by the way I should introduce here since they eat so many 'batatas fritas' or french fries.  Most meals eaten at restaurants are served with fries and usually rice...a customary combination.

YES, THAT IS A FRIED EGG ON TOP, ALSO HAM, A HOTDOG OF SOME SORT PLUS THE HAMBURGER & CHEESE COVERED WITH "FRANCISINIA SAUCE"

A hamburger 'especial' doesn't mean with lettuce & tomato!!

SINCE TASTING THEM....ELDER ANDERTON HAS GROWN TO LIKE THEM....I TOLD HIM HE BETTER LIMIT IT TO NO MORE THAN 3 OVER THE COURSE OF OUR MISSION...IT'S PRETTY CHOLESTEROL DENSE!!

Octopus Salad...Interesting idea?!?

Notice for the next time you serve Octopus it is best to serve Octopus with the suction cups facing up!

I really enjoyed this....it is lamb and very tasty!

This is a a real treat and the most tender meat I have ever tasted... PORK CHEEKS!  Which makes sense...if you have a pig that goes around smiling all day that will make for a very big and tender muscle!

One night at a 'Peixe' or fish restaurant.... we were able to try a variety of native fish.  On these two platters are shark,  tuna, and a large red fish that I don't know the name of.  Also, believe it or not...FISH CHEEKS!  All really yummy!

Yes, the main dish was great but I struggled through the appetizers.  However, others really loved them.

This one just makes me wonder....who was the first one to think that their might be something edible inside a crusty, rocky, barnacle??  And it is so hard to find the 'thing' and dig it out with a tiny fork it hardly seems worth the effort.  Maybe it was some cast away with nothing else to eat and then brought the idea home as a rare and tasty treat?

LOVE, LOVE THIS DRINK FOUND ON THE ISLANDS OF THE AZORES...YUM

DIDN'T GET A PICTURE OF THE ACTUAL FOOD...BUT WE ATE THIS DINNER COOKED IN THESE POTS.  THEY USE THE VOLCANIC ACTIVITY IN THE EARTH TO DIG DOWN , BURY THE POT AND THEN SLOW COOK IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS.....IT WAS REALLY GOOD! EACH RESTAURANT HAD A LITTLE NAME PLATE STUCK INTO THE MOUND WHERE THEIR POTS WERE COOKING.
THIS IS HARD TO SEE, BUT ON THIS PLATTER THERE ARE SAUSAGES AND SLICED PINEAPPLE...SOUNDS PRETTY TASTY RIGHT?... WELL THE CATCH FOR ME WAS THAT THEY ARE 'BLOOD SAUSAGES'  I COULDN'T EAT THEM EVEN BEFORE I KNEW WHAT THEY WERE AND FOR SURE NOT AFTER!  BUT AGAIN, OTHERS AT THE TABLE FOUGHT OVER THE EXTRAS.??

That was really fun to show the kids the pictures of the food you are trying. I think every mission- even ones in the states will have food you may end up trying for the first time. Good to let the kids see you being brave. BON APPETITE!

Dex, one day you'll be on a mission and will be eating all the delicacies of your country. It could even be somewhere in the USA!
